Joy Luck Club - The Scar
Chapter 2 talked about An-Mei Hsu's childhood and her
mysterious mother. An-Mei's mother left her when she was just a
child and An-Mei lived with her Popo until one hot summer day
when Popo got very sick.
An-Mei was brought up the traditional way by her grandmother.
All her life she was told stories of what happens to disobedient girls.
Popo also told An-Mei her mother's shame and never is An-Mei to say
her mother's name. An-Mei grew up thinking she did not have a mother
and believed her Popo when she said that a goose had laid an egg and
that's how An-Mei was born.
When An-Mei was four years old her mother tried to take her back
from Popo but of course Popo and An-Mei's aunt wouldn't let her. Then an
accident happened, and An-Mei's mother left. Two years later when Popo
was sick and dying An-Mei's mother came back. Although An-Mei almost had
no memory of her mother she still loved her. To show her respect,
An-Mei's mother cut off a piece of her flesh and drop it in Popo's
medicine in hoping of saving her mother one last time. But to no avail,
that night Popo died.
