Joy Luck Club - Joy Luck Club
In the first chapter of the Joy Luck Club the author starts
by talking about the person who started the Joy Luck Club, Suyuan
Woo. The first chapter was told in a first person perspective. The
daughter of Suyuan Woo, Jing-Mei describes her mother's past. She
tells us that her mother was once rich in China and married an officer
of the Chinese army. Then war broke out and the rich became the
poor and the poor poorer. In the time of poverty and sadness
June's mother started a small club. Everyday the members would
gather around and celebrate, temporarily forgetting all their
troubles.
After Suyuan Woo immigrated to the United States she started
the San Francisco version of the Joy Luck Club and she tells us her
experience of being in the club for the first time.
When Suyuan Woo died the other members of Joy Luck Club
give her daughter a plane ticket, some money and information about her
long lost siblings. Telling June that it was her mother last
request to give June the job of finding her siblings in China.
